A new ruling has just come into force, limiting traffic on Budapest’s iconic Chain Bridge to vehicles under five tonnes. The law prevents tourist buses and lorries from crossing the Danube between the hotel-lined Pest embankment and Clark Ádám tér, right below the main tourist sight of Buda Castle. Buses run by city transport authority BKK are exempt, and will still be able to use the bridge.

Chain Bridge has recently been the subject of fierce debate over its long-term renovation, with no start or completion date yet announced.

The condition of Chain Bridge is continuously monitored in accordance with the inspection procedure. According to the new ruling, a recent status report indicated that weight restrictions on the bridge needed to be more rigorously enforced.

Cars, minibuses and vans may continue to use the bridge – as well, of course, as cyclists and pedestrians.
