Brownies, raspberry mousse and raw carrot cake all feature at pocket-sized Plantmilkyway, a new vegan dessert destination alongside acclaimed Budapest landmark, the Great Market Hall. These and other cakes and treats not only suit a sustainable lifestyle but are also free from allergens, including soy and gluten.

An active pastry maker for the past four years, Kitti Sőtér has recently taken her sweet profession in a new direction for her own health reasons. To showcase to her passion, Sőtér has just opened vegan-friendly Plantmilkyway, right by the city’s most famous market hall. Besides being entirely free from animal products, all desserts served here are made without gluten or soy, while nut-free versions are also available.

What goes into each cake are an intense combination of flavours and a fair share of fantasy: raspberry mousse is artfully layered atop a pistachio base and filled with rose-infused jelly, while chocolate-cookie entremets come with peanuts and cacao ganache. Then there are the brownies with blackcurrant jelly and Turkish hazelnut.

No one cake feels too sweet or heavy, the fruit-based desserts are especially light and refreshing. Treats are priced at around 800-900 forints. Coffee is sourced from Casino Mocca, roasters of specialty java in Hungary.

The number of vegan eateries in Budapest has multiplied in recent years, indicating that sustainable dietary choices are gaining greater popularity. A special courtyard for food trucks, Vegan Garden, reopens this weekend to serve those who follow this lifestyle or anyone who wants to cut down on their meat consumption. Once a month on a Sunday, the downtown Anker’t ruin pub hosts a vegan market, Budapest’s biggest gastronomic bazaar for plant-based products.
