NUBU to design Hungary’s outfits for the 2020 Olympics
Hungary’s athletes will be striding out in outfits designed by Budapest’s NUBU for official ceremonies at next year’s Tokyo Olympics. The long-established brand edged ahead of nearest competitors Dóri Tomcsányi and Nanushka to win this exclusive tender.
A total of eight contenders submitted their collections for Hungary to wear at the Olympics starting in July 2020, and for the Paralympics the following month.
In a ceremony at Budapest’s prestigious MOME university for art and design, the three brands short-listed for the award were singled out for special praise before NUBU’s name was drawn from the envelope.
With a prominent showroom on Andrássy út, NUBU has been creating sophisticated urban wear for women since 2007. Founded by Judit Garam, NUBU welcomed MOME graduate and London-trained designer Adél Kovács into the fold in 2011.
The brand is also present in Tokyo, Shanghai, Beijing, Hong Kong and Kuwait, as well as the US.
In accepting the honour, NUBU's designers emphasised that the three most important aspects of the design were Hungarian identity, respect for Japan and the brand's appearance. When creating their kimono-inspired garments, with sustainability in mind, they also made sure to use organic cotton and recyclable materials.
