Five critically endangered and rare Cuban crocodiles have just moved into Budapest Zoo. The crocs are only about half a metre long, but in a few years’ time they can grow to up to two metres.

Cuban crocodiles outside captivity are now only found in the Zapata Swamp and on the Isle of Youth. Hunting has forced these reptiles onto the critically endangered list, so captive breeding projects are being put in place to help the species recover. Five two year olds have just moved into Budapest Zoo, where they can be visited in the Crocodile House by the big lake. Despite its modest size, a Cuban crocodile is a highly aggressive animal, and potentially dangerous to humans.
