Budapest will host the FINA World Aquatics Championships in 2027. The decision, just announced in South Korea, comes ten years after the city’s successful staging of the FINA finals in 2017.

For the second time in a decade, Budapest is to host the FINA World Aquatics Championships, the biennial global games of swimming, diving and water sports. Races are expected to take place at the Duna Aréna, built especially for FINA 2017, the Alfréd Hajós pool complex on Margaret Island and Balatonfüred.

In announcing the decision, FINA president Julio Maglione said: “The capital of Hungary organised the best-ever World Championships two years ago and there was no doubt in us placing our trust in you again”.

The 2017 FINA championships saw world records fall and two gold medals for Hungarian swimmer Katinka Hosszú in the individual medleys. Budapest had stepped in at the last minute to host the event after Mexico City dropped out in 2015.
