Keleti station has just reopened after two weeks of renovation. Along with essential rail maintenance, improvements have also been made to the public areas of this historic landmark dating back to 1884. Here are the highlights.

For two weeks in May, Budapest's busiest train station was closed to rail traffic. Many international, InterCity and commuter services were rerouted via Nyugati and Déli while work on Keleti took place.

So what’s changed?

First, the overhead power supply and other essential elements, which should cut down delays. According to state rail company MÁV, 489 worn-out sleepers, 3,850 reinforced concrete bases, 2.5km of rails and 131 shifting parts have been replaced.

More noticeably, some 20 souvenir, money-exchange and food stalls have been cleared to make the main hall more orderly. Outlets are now uniform in colour and typography.

A new passenger LED display panel has been installed, the platform area embellished with a scattering of flowerbeds and benches. The entire main hall was also rewalled.

A walk around this grandiose station will reveal that there is still much more work to do. Plans include a full renovation and accessibility within five years, with new international waiting rooms and ticket offices.
