As long-term fans of Zsolt Vidák, we have already introduced his work in great detail with our previous article. Zsolt draws everyday city scenes, grabbing that unique essence of Budapest while adding incongruous characters such as Hitchcock, a bear, an astronaut or his own family to his graphics. This time, the talented artist has drawn Deák tér's Anker House as never seen before, as well as more underground scenes on the metro and in an underpass.
“Over the summer I was working a lot on a stamp themed after Captain Nemo (Zsolt has been an official illustrator for the Hungarian Post for years – ed), so for weeks I was immersed in an underwater world. After finishing it, I stumbled upon my former Ankert House drawings and I thought it would be great to just sink the whole scene. So I imagined this new world.”
“I imagined where docks for boats and passageways between houses would be and what life would be like in a city flooded with water.”
“I drew pools and gardens on rooftops. Boats circle around on the narrow channels and even a steamboat pops up. Of course, I drew Captain Nemo’s boat too, and a whale and a shark that happily swim around. I recreated the whole picture from beginning to end, but in a more picturesque and looser style."
“I’ve drawn two other graphics as well; one is called The Last Metro. It often happens that everyone but me gets off the metro and I continue my journey alone in an empty carriage. That’s when the whole space is mine. In this picture, a man is heading home after a long day at work on the last metro. He is holding a goldfish in a tank – it will be a gift for his wife.”
The other new graphic, The Key Copier, depicts meditative tranquillity. “The old key copier is waiting for the last customers before closing, reading a book. There are many other books waiting on the counter. The underpass is quiet and empty, only light travels through. By the way, this is at Astoria.”
