Panoramic Batthyány tér across the Danube from Parliament is the latest destination for healthy breakfasts in Budapest. Contemporary in its design and menu selection, Home of Franziska is where smoothies are served in sizeable bowls, and where omelette is presented with spinach and goats’ cheese. The Franziska brand, known for its tasteful dessert boxes offered online for delivery, also sells paleo cookies and vegan cakes. Light-roast coffee comes from My Little Melbourne, fine Asian tea from the Zhao Zhou shop.
The Franziska label is a true labour of love for one Budapest-based confectioner, Franziska Horváth, who found her passion in baking during her university years. With a diploma in her pocket, her convoluted corporate job-hunting attempts ended up becoming the drive behind creating the Franziska brand.
Primarily selling dessert boxes filled with paleo cakes, this solo venture has now found its permanent home in Buda, where the basic line of Franziska’s sweet selection is complete with all kinds of salubrious breakfasts available all day.
Simple from the outside, inside the restaurant combines natural tones and elements for relaxing harmony. Woven pillows, hexagon tiles and pastel-coloured ceramics add to the homely ambience.
On the menu, you’ll find creamy oatmeal (950 forints), granola (1,200 forints), even avocado toast served with poached egg (2,000 forints). Then there are those substantial smoothie bowls (from 1,400 forints) containing a lengthy list of superfoods. The acai & coconut smoothie comes with strawberry cream, banana, coconut cream, acai berries, coconut chips, blueberries, chia seeds, almond and homemade coconut milk.
Ordinary breakfast treats include croissants (750 forints) and eggs Benedict (1,700 forints). The daily changing pastry selection has recently featured vegan chocolate cake with cashews.
Soups and salads are added to the options. The menu currently lists BerBer couscous and quinoa salad with chicken, mango chutney and mint (both priced at 2,200 forints). Wine, craft beer and Aperol Spritz are also available, anticipating that the Franziska might extend its business hours until after 6pm.
