Named after Hungary’s first prime minister Lajos Batthyány, this scenic Buda square facing the neo-Gothic Parliament building across the Danube has seen various openings in recent years. New bakeries and cafés now show the great potential this neighbourhood has to offer. However, the current role of Batthyány tér as a bus hub diminishes its architectural heritage defined by an imposing market hall and an 18th-century church built in Baroque style.
According to plans, the new communal recreation zone should be landscaped to modern-day standards, while suiting the surroundings. An ornate new pavement, benches and a redesigned green space should enhance the historic look of the square.
As the bus concourse will be shifted to a new location, services in the future will only pass alongside Batthyány tér. Changes will not affect the underground station of metro line M2 and the terminus for HÉV trains to Óbuda and Szentendre.
