Budapest has just welcomed its first herb bar in the city centre, steps away from shopping haven Váci utca. Aptly named herBar, this new two-in-one place fuses a store and a hangout. Guests can pop by to take home aromatic concoctions or stay longer and sip teas on the spot. For something to eat, the waffles are even suitable for those on special diets. Treats are seasoned with the outlet’s unique blends of herbs and spices, of course.

Intersecting with main shopping destination Váci utca, Haris köz is a quiet side street in central Budapest, home to unpretentious souvenir shops and fashion stores. Here you’ll find the city’s first outlet specifically focused on herbs and spices, plus the concoctions, decoctions, tinctures and teas made from these natural products.

On the shelves of bright-yet-cosy herBar are blackcurrant leaves, lapacho tea, dried hibiscus flowers, cinnamon-scented oil, even herb-infused wines. The brains behind this concept is founder Rita Horváth, who gained inspiration from her mother’s immense knowledge of natural remedies. Building on this family heritage, Horváth opened herBar this autumn as her first venture.

Pre-mixed tea blends and exotic spices are also available, as well as cordials made of lavender, sage and a version that tastes like gingerbread. Guests who want to stay longer and would like to take in something more solid than teas are treated to crispy waffles filled with spreads, fresh vegetables and cheese.

Dishes are gluten- and lactose-free, and sweet versions also feature. Looking beyond the pleasantly mild autumn weather, herBar’s cacao-rich hot chocolate will be a real soul-warming treat when the frosty season hits town.
