On any given day, art galleries, chic eateries and cafés make Buda’s Bartók Béla út a laidback thoroughfare for strolling and browsing. These urban destinations take on a new role this weekend as they host the annual ElevenŐsz autumn festival, this year themed around Mexico. Tequila, quesadillas and Frida Kahlo inspire the whole event – with admission free to most happenings.

Between September 14th and 16th, a Budapest street carnival will be transformed into a vibrant Mexican fiesta with tacos, margaritas and cultural attractions, including exotic photo exhibitions, travelogue screenings, music and dance.

Locations with art exhibitions include recently opened fusion bar Béla, historic literary hangout Hadik, the Pagony bookshop and K.A.S Gallery. The displayed drawings, paintings and photos have been created by Mexican artists or by those inspired by Mexican culture.

The Gross Arnold Gallery runs workshops focused on the art of Frida Kahlo, whose works are currently on display at the Hungarian National Gallery. Bor és Kézműves invites visitors to decorate eco-friendly bags with Mexican motifs.

Meanwhile, guests at Hadik, Moha Café and Café Gottier can watch a travel documentary featuring the many wonders of Mexico.

The tastes of this exotic destination can also be sampled at cosy Kelet Café, offering Mexican drinks and sweets, while Chocofacture will be hosting lollipop-making workshops.

On Sunday, Arriba! Taquería is the place to go to learn guacamole-making techniques, while the historic Gellért Hotel sets a Mexican Sunday Brunch with unlimited food and drink (8,900 forints) between noon and 3pm.

Some participating locations feature music performances and dance in the evenings.
