Although Budapest features an excellent public-transportation network, its ticketing system can often be confusing – on most buses, trams and metro trains, passengers must validate tickets for individual rides by using a variety of machines with technology ranging from cutting-edge to retro. Fortunately, last week Budapest’s BKK transit authorities released a new English-language video that walks viewers through the proper process of punching public-transport tickets, providing a useful primer for first-time visitors who plan to explore the city by riding with local commuters.

Regrettably, many Budapest newcomers end up being fined by BKK’s ticket-control officers for breaking the rules while using the city’s widespread public-transport network – and often these hapless visitors actually paid to ride buses, trams or metro trains, and simply didn’t know how to validate their tickets properly. To help first-time Budapest visitors avoid this expensive fate, BKK released a new English-language video last week that not only explains how the ticket-punching system works here, but also shows what an appropriately punched ticket looks like from each of the transit network’s myriad validation machines (including the mysterious old-fashioned red puncher) – watch the short video below:

To further assist foreign passengers, BKK launched a comprehensive new English-language ticket-validation webpage concurrently with the debut of this video.
