From next month, cyclists will be able to take their bikes on Budapest’s metro line 4 that connects Keleti and Kelenföld main rail stations. You will only be able to use a designated carriage at the back of each metro train, as well as the public lifts to take the two-wheelers down to platform level. Metro 4 is the only underground line in Budapest with a lift at every stop, so for now it will be the only one to allow bikes on board – the use of escalators with a bike is strictly forbidden in Budapest.
Currently, the transportation of bicycles is allowed on suburban railway lines (HÉV) and their replacement buses, a select number of regular buses (65, 65A and 165, trolley 77), certain trams (56, 56A, 59, 59A, 59B, 61 and 60, the cogwheel railway), as well as on boat lines D11, D12 and D14. With Budapest’s busiest underground line, Metro 3, currently under renovation, there is a chance that lifts will be installed at the revamped stations and bikes will be allowed on the trains, but this is not yet confirmed.
To take your bike on metro line 4 you only need a validated single ticket for the cycle or have a special pass costing 540 HUF for a month.
