Relaxing waters, historic landmarks and dormant volcanoes await the adventurous traveler happy to explore Lake Balaton in winter. Hot and crowded in summer, out of season Hungary’s main resort destinations are given over to locals, as well as visitors looking for something just that little bit unusual. Lake Hévíz, the thermal lake that replenishes itself every three days, is a year-round attraction, as are the baths at Zalakaros. Close to Balaton, beyond its northern shore you’ll find the medieval sights of Veszprém, surrounded by the protected landscape of the Bakony-Balaton Geopark.

A new English-friendly video has been produced by the Hungarian Tourism Agency and provided to We Love Budapest, promoting the winter delights around Lake Balaton.

Opening with scenic views of Lake Hévíz, as attractive in winter as in summer, the film takes us onto the lesser-known healing waters of Zalakaros Baths, its covered pools open year-round.

Around the north shore, we visit Szigliget Castle, with a sauna alongside, Veszprém Castle centerpieced by St.Michael’s Cathedral, and the natural wonders of the Bakony-Balaton Geopark, dotted with dormant volcanoes.

How to get there from Budapest:Trains leave from the Buda stations of Déli and Kelenföld, each with their own metro stop on red M2 and green M4 lines respectively. The journey to Hévíz/Keszthely takes 2hr 45min via Balatonszentgyörgy. For Veszprém, direct from Déli, journey time is 1hr 30min.
