In southern Hungary towards the border with Croatia, the cultural and historic hub of Pécs and wine region of Villány, set amid the lovely Mecsek Hills, provide ample reason for a visit this autumn. Christian and Ottoman landmarks, the artistic treasures of the Zsolnay Quarter and wine tours draw ever increasing numbers of tourists here, goose dishes and specialties awaiting after a hard day’s sightseeing. If you have more time, there are also spas and castles worth visiting.

A new English-subtitled video, provided to We Love Budapest by the Hungarian Tourism Agency, highlights the autumnal wonders of Pécs, Villány, and the Mecsek Hills. Bringing to life 2,000 years of history, the film takes us on a journey through Roman, Ottoman and Habsburg Pécs, fast-forwarding to the present day and into the future with the contemporary attractions of the Zsolnay Quarter and its Interactive Magic Center of science and technology.

We also take a tour of a vineyards and wine cellars of Villány, specifically Villánykövesd and Palkonya, before visiting the historic sites of Siklós and Pécsvárad, and the spas of Magyarhertelend and Harkány.

How to get there from Budapest:Trains leave Keleti Station every two hours for Pécs, journey time three hours. Change in Pécs for Villány, journey time 40 minutes, from Budapest an overall four hours.
