This month, Hungarian officials announced the plan to establish a dedicated bike path stretching over 100 kilometers between Budapest and Lake Balaton, to be completed by the end of 2018. Additionally, the bike path that surrounds Lake Balaton will be refurbished during the same time frame, meaning that in the summer of 2019, cyclists can enjoy an entire trip from Budapest to any destination around Lake Balaton on a series of modern pathways, featuring minimal interaction with motorized vehicles.
Along with this far-reaching project, several other bike paths will be built or refurbished over the course of 2018, including the popular cycling route connecting Budapest and Szentendre along the Danube River via Római Part, as well as to the south along the Danube between Budapest, Érd, and Százhalombatta. These cycling-route improvements are being jointly funded by the EU and Hungarian taxpayers, and will add to the country’s network of almost 1,000 kilometers of new bike paths established in recent years.
