The wildlife-rich marshlands of Hungary’s Kis-Balaton nature reserve are a historic hidden gem for hiking, bird-watching, and many other outdoor recreational pursuits. Located just west of Lake Balaton (and serving the crucial function of cleaning the lake’s water), Kis-Balaton draws nature lovers and fresh-air fiends for all kinds of active day trips and panoramic picnics – and in the next installment of our video series highlighting diverse destinations across Hungary, we present gorgeous aerial footage of this protected region.

In the English-subtitled video below, provided to We Love Budapest by the Hungarian Tourism Agency as part of their “Hungary Awaits You” campaign to showcase the wide assortment of attractions to discover across the country, we can admire fascinating drone footage of Kis-Balaton, a vast area of marshland that is a protected habitat for many animal and plant species, and learn a little about the historic and recreational activities to enjoy there:

How to get there from Budapest: by car, follow motorway M7 west from Budapest (check this article for more specific directions for getting to Lake Balaton from Budapest) and remain on this road along Balaton’s south shore until reaching exit 170, and take a right after leaving the motorway. At the first roundabout that you encounter, take road 76 and follow it through the town of Balatonszentgyörgy; pass the turnoff to road 71 and continue on road 76 toward Zalaegerszeg for about one kilometer past that fork, and look for the small brown sign pointing left toward the “Kis-Balaton Kutatoház”, which leads to the visitor center.
