The recent brainchild of the married Hungarian designer duo Balázs Oltvai and Réka Oltvai Horváth spices up even the most basic-looking meals to make kitchen routines a fun-filled activity. The creative couple developed a battery-powered gastronomy gadget shaped like a spoon that applies a decorative smidgen of seasoning to your favorite dishes and drinks – using HocuSpoon, anyone can add playful patterns and flavorful flair to their cupcakes, cappuccinos, or even scrambled eggs, and serve up such mouthwatering treats with these little personal touches. That’s what we call creative cookery!

Working as designer-engineers in Budapest for many years, Réka and Balázs always enjoy cooking up innovative inventions that add a smidgen of style to ordinary activities to make everyday duties delightful. However, when the couple started a family, they faced brand-new challenges. Raising three children together, Réka began dealing with picky eating habits, as two of her kids were refusing to eat the dishes she prepared, no matter how delicious they were.

To find a solution to this problem, the creative mom had to find palatable inspiration that would spice up her little ones' eating routines – and she discovered that adding easily understood symbols to the food she serves makes a big difference in motivating her children to consume their meals.

Offered with a variety of attachable discs that are enhanced with a variety of fun patterns, the HocuSpoon Magic Spice Spoon is a new Hungarian invention that will put smiles on people’s faces while devouring morning meals or sipping coffee.

While the designer duo originally dreamed up this inventive utensil with children in mind, the HocuSpoon can serve as a fun gadget in any innovative households. Would you like to enhance your scrambled eggs with a star-shaped sprinkle of paprika powder, or do you want to surprise a loved one by adding a sugary heart atop a slice of chocolate cake? With HocuSpoon, you don’t have to be an artsy designer to give a little extra flair to your treats.

Operating with a small battery-powered motor built inside the spoon’s handle, the plastic tool starts vibrating with the press of a button, which sprinkles the condiment through the holes of the attached discs to form various designs, including a lovely butterfly, a little sailboat, a smiley face, or a sun-shaped pattern. The cute cutlery comes with 16 detachable discs, so we can surprise our near and dear ones with a different pictorial message every day. While this exciting instrument had primarily been developed for home use, and it’s currently the star of a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign to help raise funds for its protective packaging, Café Arnoldo in Buda’s District XI (Budapest 1111, Bartók Béla út 46) has already been serving some of their hot drinks and scrumptious treats enhanced with HocuSpoon’s magical designs. Réka added that on request, they can create customized stencils with simple logo designs, so it might very well make the spoon an attractive business appliance in the future.

However, the Magic Spice Spoon is not the first groundbreaking kitchen gear that Réka and Balázs have at their fingertips: another invention of the prolific pair is called the CinniBird, a battery-powered bird-shaped spice pen that is suitable for drawing or writing with cinnamon powder or ground spices in any shapes and forms. CinniBird is available for purchase in the product’s official webshop for 29 USD. Réka also mentioned that they are working on a new project that they can't yet reveal details about yet – we look forward to seeing what this creative couple will cook up next!
