Addicted2Caffeine opened a year ago in the building of the erstwhile Bartók Cinema, and has been bewitching Budapest with excellent coffees made with great pleasure ever since. It is a new-wave café, where sometimes the coffee is soaked for hours, and then comes served cold, and where guests slowly stop adding small piles of sugar and drops of milk in their cups, because the coffee here is just truly tasty as it is. Skilled baristas make the delicious coffee creations from Central American, African, or Asian beans coming from a German roaster. Occasionally, we can even order cascara, which is made of the dried skin of coffee-cherry beans soaked in water.So far what we know about Addicted2Caffeine is that they love making scrumptious high-quality coffee creations, but there is something else we can get ‘addicted’ to here: wine. When they included wines in their assortment, instead of renaming the place to “Addicted2Caffeine & Wine”, they named the cozy wine corner Figula Borsarok (meaning “Figula Wine Corner”). This bit is found downstairs, and it evokes Lake Balaton’s Figula Borbár with its colors and pictures hanging on the walls. The guests are never bothered by this setting – and why would they be? – as many of them drink coffee downstairs and sip on wines upstairs; this division has only a symbolic significance.
Downstairs we also find a kids’ corner with countless toys. We settled down upstairs, where we caught the last rays of warm afternoon sunshine beaming through the large glass surface, and we amazedly gazed at the skillful barista bustling around. This is when we caught sight of some writing on the wall that describes the spirit of this unit perfectly: “Coffee keeps me going until it’s time for wine.” This really is what this place is all about: we can pop in for a cup of beautiful – and truly very stylish – flat white really early in the morning (from 7:30am), and then between 4pm and 10pm we can spend some time sipping on a glass of high-quality white, rosé, or red wine. Whether we come for coffee or wine, it is worthwhile to have a bite to eat as well in both cases: well, only if you don’t mind having fresh homemade croissants, or Édes Sári’s lovely cakes for breakfast. With our wine, we can also have savory snacks from a wide selection of wine tapas that contain more than just traces of cheese, ham, and olives. Here we have to highlight that they also have sandwiches on offer that could qualify as gourmet courses. Their secret lies in the carefully picked, high-quality ingredients – true story, even if it sounds corny – as the cream cheese stuffed in the croissant, the matured ham, and the Holland cheese make up a heavenly combo. We can also order cambozola cheese, pear, and ham on toasted rustic bread, for which we would come back anytime.
We would like to mention one more thing: there are also some extra treats in the selection, such as spicy Coke, ginger ale, ChariTea and Lemonaid. Regarding the last two, it is worthwhile to bear in mind that after each purchased bottle, a certain amount of money goes back to the producing country. Overall, if anywhere, here it is highly likely to become an addicted regular.
