Found just a few steps away from St. Stephen’s Basilica, Vai Me offers authentic dishes of Georgia like achma, red bean pie, or eggplant rolls – all for quite reasonable prices, especially for this part of central Pest. The menu includes some 80 different dishes, and the crew in the open kitchen tries to prepare everything as healthily as possible, but that doesn’t affect the flavors. For anyone looking for something different for lunch or to just try an exotic snack, we definitely recommend checking out this culinary selection from the not-too-far East.

Vai Me, the newest Georgian restaurant in Budapest, opened recently on Október 6 Street. However, this isn’t their only location – in Moscow, you can find four more locations of this burgeoning chain, with a fifth one is about to open there this year. Those who are tired of ordinary lunch menus and want to try something new should definitely visit this place: Georgian cuisine’s trademark ingredients are garlic, coriander, saffron, and hot pepper, but they use a lot of bean, eggplant, walnut, and potatoes in their dishes.

The fact that you can choose from nearly 80 different dishes doesn’t make the selection process easy, but this is balanced out by the portions not being too big or expensive, because they want to inspire people to try as many different things during a lunch as they can, which surely spices up the middle of the day.

We tried a spicy bean puree named lobio (500 HUF), an eggplant roll filled with walnuts (550 HUF), some spinach-walnut balls called pkhali (550 HUF), eggplant stew, ojakhuri (grilled mushrooms with potatoes and tomatoes – 900 HUF) and homemade bread with tomatoes (500 HUF).

If you aren’t familiar with the Georgian cuisine, you’ll surely be surprised at first bite: all of the flavors are very intensive, and the dishes are very varied and filling. Another important part of Vai Me’s concept is that they try to prepare everything as healthily as possible, so, for example, the bread that we tried was baked on the spot and made with whole wheat. The restaurant offers gluten-free options, too.

We asked about how authentic their dishes are, and their answer was: absolutely.

However, they also have exclusively created fusion dishes, like the Grusian burger, which can only be ordered here. Between 10am and noon, they also serve breakfast, like boiled eggs (950 HUF) and pancakes (500 HUF).

The whole place operates on a self-service basis, and orders are presented really quickly, but that doesn’t effect their quality or authenticity – it only means that you can hop in even for a quick lunch. After ordering at the counter and paying for it, customers are given a beeper that produces different sounds when an order is ready. You can watch the whole cooking process, as Vai Me has an open kitchen.

Since the place only opened in recent weeks, we’re sure that there will be some changes ahead, but we were already satisfied with everything. We hope that they will also start to offer Georgian beers and wines to accompany the food, because that would provide another reason to visit them.
