Located a short stroll away from Ferenciek Square on Váci Street near the corner of Kígyó Street, Nagy Fa-Tál Konyhája (“Large Wooden Bowl Kitchen”) is popular among foreign guests who seek to discover genuine Hungarian flavors, although quite a few locals are also enjoying the rural cuisine here because of its close resemblance to the meals cherished from memories of countryside family gatherings during childhood.Nagy Fa-Tál Konyhája opened last year after the site was completely remodeled to capture the essence of Hungarian hospitality, with classic touches like red-checkered tablecloths and a beautifully crafted copper ventilator over the kitchen; meanwhile, the awning-covered terrace makes this a fine spot for feasting while watching the world pass by.

As can be expected of a traditional Hungarian restaurant, the menu is loaded with meaty regional specialties like goulash soup, goose liver, grilled sausages, and beef stew, all seasoned with plenty of paprika – but since we were seeking the most complete edible experience available at Nagy Fa-Tál Konyhája, we tried a complete platter of pork-based delicacies, and the huge portion we received was anything but disappointing.

This platter is designed for two people to share, and is made up of various charcoal-grilled meats (sausage-stuffed pork tenderloin, homemade sausage, Hungarian spare ribs, and grilled sausages), with side dishes like potatoes, steamed rice, rösti, fresh mixed salad, and varied pickles. Two of us could hardly manage to eat the whole thing, even though we arrived hungry; our favorite was definitely the sausage-stuffed pork tenderloin. Although we couldn’t even consider eating anything else after this mighty meal, we also admired the equally oversized entrées enjoyed by fellow patrons, including poultry and Hungarian fish like trout and catfish. The Hungarian atmosphere is established not only with the menu, but also by the atmosphere – especially on Friday evenings when a live band plays Gypsy music alongside a charming folk-dance performance. Best of all, the prices at Nagy Fa-Tál Konyhája are absolutely moderate when compared to most other restaurants on Váci Street, particularly when considering the authenticity of the countryside Hungarian flavors – all appropriately accompanied by an intoxicating collection of regional wines.
