Kincsem Park, built in 1925, is Budapest’s largest horse-racing track, and in its early days this was Europe’s most modern racecourse. Among other notable steeds, the famous racehorse Imperial began the journey toward world fame here. The enjoyment of spectators is ensured by a 3,500-seat grandstand, a reception hall that can accommodate 1,000 people, a closed-circuit relay system with 73 televisions, a 400-seat air-conditioned panoramic restaurant, and four fully equipped VIP boxes. Meanwhile, the enormous grassy fields here provide a unique venue for additional events.
Beginning this month, visitors will see a new side of Kincsem Park including flat races, harness races, and greyhound races. At these special events, visitors can cheer the horses with a cocktail in hand, bet on the contestants, and party until dawn under the open sky.
István Pécsi, the director of Kincsem National Ltd., visited England a few years ago and experienced how popular concerts and parties combined with horse-racing events are on Friday nights there. In Hungary, these racing events were usually held on Wednesdays, but these did not prove to be really successful, so they decided to reschedule the entire program to the beginning of the weekend, since that is when people generally are most eager to have fun.
The special race series, lasting from May 8th through September 4th, primarily targets young people, with an opportunity to learn about the excitement of equine sports and to party. The program begins at 6pm, and the DJ will dictate the pace before, during, and after the races. One of the event series’ specialties is a new from of horse race which was never held in Hungary before. Previously the shortest race distance was 1,800 meters, but this is now shortened to 200 meters in order to hold an eight-contestant knockout race.
Another promising event will be the greyhound race, reorganized after 43 years, during which dogs occupy the field instead of horses. It is important to know that, compared to the usual rates, Kincsem Park will await visitors with more favorable prices between May and September.
The highlight of the event series will be the Derby and Gastro Angel Festival between July 3 and 5, for which visitors can win tickets during the bi-weekly night races.
