Hungarians usually celebrate the 20th of August with huge parades, fun fairs and with amazing fireworks but there is one other tradition that they follow year after year. They choose a special national birthday cake that is made from typical Hungarian ingredients. This year the winner is apple-poppy seed cake from Szabolcs County, by Kokó Confectionery.

The competition was quite tough this year – the nominees were the following: pumpkin-apple cake, raspberry cake with honey and basil, golden pear cake, national tricolour cake and last but not least the apple-poppy seed cake, which turned out to be the winner. The special delicacy is the creation of Zsolt Pintér who used apples, poppy seed, a hint of cinnamon and vanilla to prepare the cake.

This year, for the first time, a sugar-free version was selected as well. The winner is an apple cake with gooseberry, made by László Zila. The cake contains no processed flour or sugar, no additives and no preservatives so it is a healthy alternative and an ideal choice for people with diabetes.

If you would like to try these one-of-a-kind tastes you should visit the Street of Hungarian Flavours or one of the confectionaries that offer the cake on the 19th and 20th of August.
