Towards the end of November the arrival of the two Tasmanian wombats stirred up quite some feelings, while in February the birth of the baby giraffe created a buzz in the press. There’s no stopping life in the zoo and more and more people will be drawn in to check it out as the weather gets ever more brighter.

The darker side of all this is that out of the five EU-supported projects four is still being carried out, so not only living beings but machines are also to be found in the Zoo. In exchange, though, within some months an all new zoo will await visitors. All conveniences for animal and people alikeThe completed project is that of the big pond, where, after the post-construction works in 2011, only the water quality remain a slightly unfinished business. The natural-looking environment was essential for both esthetic reasons and to suit animals. Other elements of the “habitat and collection reconstruction project” are the renovation of the Japanese garden and the area around the main gate and the building of a precipitation system, this latter being a significant means of a more economic operation. “Project Main Gate” aims to both reconstruct the monument and create an area where visitors can be served more thoroughly. An exhibition about the history of the City Park, information booth, new toilets and more are among the plans.200 eggs by mailLast year saw the birth of tiger cubs and the arrival of wombats, flamingos and aardvarks. The most recent sensation is the baby giraffe, that was born a not a month ago but the near future also holds big excitements. A mate is coming for the hyena, the elephants coupled successfully and more new species are on the way. 200 stick-bug eggs could arrive any minute and the order form for 150 piranhas has been signed, as well. Besides all these naked mole rats, antelopes, cloud rats, Dalmatian Pelicans, horseshoe crabs and rays will soon find their homes in the Budapest Zoo. We sincerely hope that the polar bears will be productive, too – the employees of the zoo suspect a sweeping love between the couple. On this side of the Magic Mountain

Closer, clearer, faster, more interactively and ever more intense – human beings of the 21st century crave for all these wherever they set their foot. Even in the zoo. “Project Magic Mountain” builts on this. 17 rooms in a 3200 m² territory full of live animals, fossils, interesting finds from the Prehistoric Era, adventurous games, a 3D cinema and a simulation screening will welcome those interested. Apart from different beasts, prehistoric people and dinosaurs will also be on display once it’s completed, on 18 May, if everything goes well. Until then for a month, tickets are sold with a 15% discount to make up for the big ruckus.
