The holiday season tends to make us feel more grateful for what we have, and increases our desire to help people who are less fortunate so that they can have a merry Christmas, too. In Budapest, there are various ways that we can contribute to good causes, and we don’t necessarily have to give cash to charity organizations to do so, as several events are happening citywide where we can help by munching on a slice of cake, sipping on a glass of mulled wine, or taking a taxi. We present various ways that you can help poverty-stricken people during this special time of the year in Budapest.

At the grand Budapest Nutcracker Festival of the Hungarian State Opera – happening during December 1-31 – visitors can enjoy a towering Christmas tree, booths selling delicious hot drinks, and live musical programs. Also, leading singers of the Opera House are selling tasty mulled wine and tea in the elegant stage-set-like Christmas booth of the festival during the hour before The Nutcracker performances (see the Opera House performance schedule for specific times). The total revenue of the Christmas booth will be donated to the Hungarian Interchurch Aid.
Alternatively, Most Kortárs Bistro recently baked 500 gingerbread treats that we can buy in the restaurant located on Zichy Street for 500 forints each, supporting the work of Budapest Bike Maffia that helps homeless people living on the streets of Budapest. At IKKONA Manufaktúra, we can sip on a glass of “charity beer” called Share throughout the whole year, and by buying a glassful of this tasty tipple, we donate the full price of the beer to a civil organization. We can taste Share beer at several other hangouts as well, such as at Pirítós, Krak’n Town, Léhűtő, and Margitutcakilenc.
Menedék (a Hungarian association for migrants) holds their Christmas party at Mika Tivadar Mulató on December 15th, where anyone can support their work by entering a draw with a 500-forint ticket. Furthermore, it is also possible to donate public-transport tickets here to Menedék. If you use Taxify’s services for a ride in Budapest, the driver donates 30 forints – which then gets doubled by the company – to three charity organizations that the passenger can choose from. The Katona József Theater also welcomes donations for destitute people; non-perishable food, toiletries, toys, and clothes can be placed in a box found in the theater’s foyer between December 6-18.

If you’d like to give stylish desginer items to someone special for Christmas, you can do so while also donating to charity, as Design Terminal holds a Charity Design Auction conducted by Nóra Winkler on December 13th, where you can bid for the unique items of young Hungarian designers. The opening bid for each item is 3,000 forints, and the total revenue will be offered to the Hungarian Interchurch Aid’s “Hunger for Love” program. At the Christmas Market of Konyha, held on December 17th, visitors can purchase stylish products by local designers and craftspeople, including the artworks of MAACRAFT, made jointly by people living with autism and professional artists. By hanging a My Budapest Photo Project 2017 calendar purchased at the market on your wall, you support the homeless people who took the photographs featured in the calendar; furthermore, fundraising to support the work of Budapest Bike Maffia is also held at the fair.
The Kössük Össze Charity Auction and Fair is held for the third time this year on December 17th, offering the products of Hungarian designers and enthusiastic amateurs. The total proceeds of the event will be donated to support the job-seeking mothers living at LEA Mother’s Home. Meanwhile, the ongoing WAMP Santa Shop proffers the works of 30 well-known designers in the lobby of th Marriott Hotel until December 31st, and for every item sold, they provide one euro to the Hungarian Organization of SOS Children’s Villages.

This year, the biggest Christmas Fairs also provide opportunities to support charity. At Vörösmarty Square, a different organization presents their work and holds fundraising events each week. At the Advent Feast by the Basilica, we can donate money or buy gifts at a charity booth, also supporting the “Hunger for Love” campaign of the Hungarian Interchurch Aid organization. At the Christmas Fair in Óbuda, we can visit the fundraising stands set up by the Flóra Organization.

In addition to the aforementioned events, we can also help the needy by putting together a shoebox full of toys and sweets, and taking it to a drop-off point in Budapest. Here is some basic information about this simple way of supporting people in need:
Mikulásgyár awaits donations at Felvonulási Square and at Lurdy Ház, while for the Transylvanian orphans of Csaba Böjte, you can leave Christmas boxes at various venues listed here.
Suhanj! Organization collects toys, stuffed animals, books, and sports clothes that are in good condition for visually impaired and handicapped kids staying at the Rehabilitation Center of the Children’s Hospital in Buda. The drop-off points and the opening hours are found here. At Menhely Organization you can support homeless people with donations, while Bagatellini at MOM Park helps fulfill little children’s wishes with the help of its magical Christmas tree.
