Római Part
Found on the Buda shore just a short journey upriver from downtown, Római Part is a tree-shaded promenade of laid-back open-air eateries and pubs, with people biking and strolling past at a perpetually lazy pace. The special atmosphere and fresh air here makes this an easy escape from stifling city-center living; we love hanging out on a beach chair at Fellini with a glass of cherry beer in hand, and nearby there are plenty of places to have a raspberry, lemon, or kiwi slushie. Turn your trip here into an easy excursion by taking the public ferryboat from downtown.

National Museum gardens
Providing an oasis of greenery in the Pest city center, the National Museum’s sprawling garden offers many shady spots at all times of day. Originally the idea of noted Magyar architect Mihály Pollack, the park was known as Muzi in the past, and it serves as a setting in multiple classics of Hungarian literature. While wandering beneath the leafy branches looking for a pleasant spot to sit, make sure to check out some of the intriguing statues and monuments placed around the grounds.

Pál-völgyi Cave
In a recent article, we described an adventurous journey toward the center of the Earth in Pál-völgyi Cave, but now we have another reason to visit the cave beyond discovering its natural beauty: the cooling factor. The temperature in these underground chambers remains around 10 degrees Celsius all year long, so when it’s much hotter than that above ground in Budapest, we are eager to get subterranean just 15 minutes away from Kolosy Square; check out the official website for more details.

Children’s Railway
Running along the ridge of the Buda Hills, the Children’s Railway might seem like an odd choice for a hot-day activity, but the open-air train cars, cooler elevation, and tree-shaded stops surrounded by forested parkland all have great appeal when summer sizzles. Along the way there are a few pleasant places to enjoy some cold drinks and light food, such as the panoramic parkland of Normafa, where families often gather during summer to enjoy sweeping views and rétes pastries.
