This winter brought wonderfully weird weather to Hungary’s capital – in recent days it’s been unseasonably sunny, and although it’s entirely possible that frigid temperatures may return before (or after) spring officially begins next month, the current forecast for upcoming days predicts that these relatively warm conditions will continue. We are also happily seeing signs of spring blossoming citywide – here are some uniquely local indications of Jack Frost’s farewell.

Beer bikes return downtown

Multiple pedal-powered open-air carousal conveyances are already crisscrossing the streets of Pest, with their pissed passengers chirping their songs of springtime – like unharmonious soccer-team anthems and drunkenly bellowed mating calls.

2/8

Terrace habitats repopulate

Particularly hardy restaurant patrons are starting to emerge from their indoor hibernation period to forage for lunches amid the few alfresco tables available at this time of year, especially if they’re sunshiny and furnished with blankets.

3/8

Fuzzy twigs sprout citywide

Pussy-willow branches (“barka” in Hungarian) are one of the first blooming plants of springtime in Hungary, and while they’re traditionally associated with Easter, dodgy street vendors are already selling these tufted sticks across Budapest.

4/8

Street performers begin their rituals

On Váci Street and other bustling Budapest sites, outdoor artistes now entertain passersby with their instinctual antics – we’ve spotted a short man attempting to breakdance, and the guy with a dancing pigeon and trumpeting puppet.

5/8

Runners flock to Margaret Island

Bundled athletes are continually migrating in droves around the 5.35-kilometer-long track that surrounds Budapest’s cherished parkland isle; it is likely that these sprinters will begin shedding their colorful coats within the upcoming weeks.

6/8

Thermal-bath visitors begin to thaw

Although the outdoor pool area of City Park’s historic Széchenyi Bath can be used year-round, only Hungary’s heartiest polar bears usually submerge here during winter, but now these steaming waters are once again attracting ordinary soakers.

7/8

Secondhand coats fly from the shelves

Amid Budapest’s selection of shops selling several styles of used clothing, winter jackets are now offered at deep discounts to clear space for warm-weather apparel; we saw one store where all coats cost only 990 forints (about three euros).

8/8

Party animals start drinking fröccs

While we think that Hungary’s unique wine spritzers (“fröccs”) should be savored all year, many still consider them to be solely a summertime tipple – yet we’re now seeing more bartenders pour these bubbly concoctions instead of mulled wine.
