Hidden away from the beaten path, District VIII’s Mikszáth Square is among the most atmospheric public spaces of downtown Budapest. The square’s architecturally intriguing buildings, the Sacred Heart Jesuit Church, and the spacious plaza serving as a mid-point between Kálvin Square and the Grand Boulevard create a charming atmosphere. The locally beloved Lumen café definitely plays a leading role here, but other high-quality hangouts are popping up nearby, such as Luft Cafe & Bar, offering breakfasts, sandwiches, and damned good coffee.

Mikszáth Square is a hidden plaza near the Szabó Ervin Library, the Grand Boulevard, and Kálvin Square, and for awhile the Italian café Vostro was rather popular here, until a change in ownership reversed its fortunes. Fortunately, the location was renewed and revived with a change in design, selection, and name, resulting in Luft, a shiny new café and bar promising high quality breakfasts all day long for low prices.

We’re greeted at the counter upon entering; the seating area is found above, but we can also take a seat on the terrace if the weather allows. The café’s selection has been carefully tailored to the needs and wishes of the area, keeping the sandwiches, toasts, and egg breakfasts, as well as a few sweet pastries for now – more health-conscious breakfast options are soon to come. As for coffee, the place sticks with well-proven methods and classic, Italian-roasted brews. An espresso costs 390 forints, while a latte is 750 forints. Other drinks include suki tea, which we recommend for cold mornings.

The rye bread used for the toasts (from 490 HUF) and sandwiches is provided by Marmorstein Bakery. For lack of a large kitchen, the sizable egg breakfasts are prepared behind the counter, including the omelet (890 HUF) or the Luft BLT (1,190 HUF), which is toast topped with three kinds of cheese, crispy bacon, balsamic vinegar, lettuce, and a flawless fried egg. After a hearty breakfast like this, lunchtime might come late. The breakfasts can be ordered with various toppings like cheese and forest mushrooms, although special requests will result in somewhat higher prices.

We tried a toast with avocado, pesto, and baby spinach (890 HUF), and learned that beginning in September, daring guests will be able to taste toast with avocado and mango, as well. And although it is not a main feature, beer, wine, and long drinks are available at Luft, too – making this a perfect place to begin a leisurely weekend day with a late breakfast and a strong drink.
