The colder months are here, so now it’s time to start looking for cozy indoor activities. A massage at this time of the year is always a great idea, as it warms up both the body and the spirit, while also cracking cramped joints. At the Orchidea Thai Massage Salon in Óbuda, this all happens with authentic Thai style; we can be pampered by one of the four Thai-massage pros who have been in the profession for over a decade, and enjoy a traditional or an oily massage that can be concentrated on the feet, on the back, or on the whole body. In the meantime, somehow even our soul gets soothed.

Almost everyone has already heard about Thai massage, perhaps with intimidating tales of its rigorousness, but in reality it is not at all as painful as it is reputed to be. We experienced it firsthand, when – forgetting about all stereotypes that we learned from films – we visited the Orchidea Thai Massage Salon in Óbuda.

The salon is located a little distance away from the city center on Bécsi Road, but it is easily approachable by bus number 260A, 160, or by car (free parking is available). On the first floor, a beauty salon (ICON Beauty) and a massage salon operate side by side in a 200-square-meter space, enabling visitors to even spend a whole day regenerating and relaxing here, enjoying a fresh haircut and cosmetic treatments. This time we only focused on the massage salon, which consists of five rooms, and a separated bit behind a Spanish wall, awaiting couples for foot massages.

Every detail of the design authentically evokes the Far East; deep and dark colors dominate, canopies cover the beds, and there are various Buddha and elephant-shaped statues wherever our eyes wander, while in the background Eastern tunes fill the air and candlelight flickers. We already feel as if we are in Southeast Asia’s country of smiles, and the massage hasn’t even started yet.

Guests can choose between two types of massages here; traditional and oily. A traditional massage moves and stretches the whole body while also gently cracking the bones, and it is highly recommended for people who are engaged in sedentary work, and for people who tend to have back pain. We feel a liberating and loose sensation even after the very first occasion, but it is recommended to repeat this massage every two weeks. The oily massage is more soothing, as it relaxes the muscles, and in the wintertime, upon request they also enhance the experience with warm coconut oil. There are various other variations available within this category, from a half-hour hand massage (2,500 HUF) through a couples’ massage (16,000 HUF) to a 120 minute four-hand body massage (19,500 HUF).

What makes the experience truly high-quality is that the Thai masseuses of this salon have more than ten years of experience, and this expertise can really be felt during a massage, making it all the more easy to relax and let go of stress while lying on the decorative bed. The beds always bear key importance when it comes to a massage salon, and fortunately, at Orchidea they picked them out carefully; these beds are imported from Germany, and they are wide and very comfortable.

Furthermore, Orchidea’s massages also serve as a lovely Christmas present, as they are also available through gift vouchers that can be purchased at the salon or online on their website (in Hungarian). A romantic traditional couples’ massage is highly recommended for lovebirds, and it is even enhanced with champagne, flowers, and dessert. All in all, the Thai massages make an amazing present for someone special, but we would like to encourage everyone to try this special experience themselves.
