Birds and Trees Day has been held every year in May since 1902 in Hungary, with the aim of dedicating a day to drawing attention to the importance of protecting the precious flora and fauna of the world, through enticing everyone to join exciting programs, events, and commemorations. Originally, this day started out as an educational school event, but today it has evolved into a nationwide celebration. Here in Budapest, most of the locales found on Kazinczy Street prepare something special for this day, popularizing the eco-friendly idea of establishing a pedestrian-only passage in the heart of Budapest.
During the past few years, Kazinczy Street has become so colorful that it is now impossible to proceed even a few meters without passing by an exciting shop, café, ruin bar, bistro, or pub. On May 7th these locales will all collaborate in order to show that it is worthwhile to actively strive for creating a more liveable city. On the occasion of the Day of Birds and Trees, Kazinczy will be blocked from traffic on the whole length of the street, enabling visitors to calmly stroll on the road, and enjoy the plenty of programs for all ages organized by the venues in the street.
Just as in previous years, the street will be filled with music, life and laughter, and almost all venues found in this street will prepare programs, snacks, music, or games for adults and little ones alike. It is the organizers’ unconcealed aim to show how wonderful it would be if Kazinczy Street was always a pedestrian-only thoroughfare in the heart of Erzsébetváros – and if you attend this quintessentially Budapestian street party, you’ll probably feel the same way!
