Providing a perfectly portable sweet or salty snack of stuffed fried-dough bites served with varied sauces, a new Budapest food stand is introducing an ever-tempting treat. Gömbi opened recently near Jászai Mari Square by Margaret Bridge, offering an entirely new type of street food in Budapest based on an old family recipe, resulting in low-priced nibbles that are ideal for sharing. Sweetening the deal, Gömbi stays open late into the night, so these doughy delights might even earn an important role in the after-hours munchie scene.

Street food is becoming a cliché for those who live in Budapest, but the overabundance of to-go treats is inspiring some creative new snacks that are well worth trying, such as new-wave lángos and chimney-cake ice-cream cones. An example of this has just opened recently in a refurbished booth near Jászai Mari Square, with a pretty simple concept: Gömbi sells fried-dough balls stuffed with savory Trappistcheese and sweet túró cheese.

The idea for the little globes was inspired by a family recipe – the Gömbi crew basically improved a dessert, made a salty version of it, and added a few exciting sauces to the mix, including sweet flavors like chocolate, raspberry, and caramel, alongside salty sauces like cheddar cheese and barbecue. As a final touch, they designed a special package so that this dish could easily be eaten on the street.

The prices are as follows: six Gömbi costs 380 forints, while the sauces cost 100 forints each; given how each pack is pretty satisfying, the price is really quite reasonable. The team really doesn’t want to overcomplicate things, so these two types of dough balls and the sauces their entire selection – which is pretty appealing, especially if the point is to quickly grab something on the go.

The opening hours of Gömbi were created to suit the needs for hungry party people, or those who are on their way home after a night out, so during weekends they are open until 2am (otherwise, they close at 10pm). We’ll surely pick up another package of them next time we pass through Jászai Mari Square, no matter what time it is!Gömbi
