In 1984, American photographer Steve McCurry took a picture of a green-eyed Afghan girl, creating one of the most famous images in the entire world – but it would be a shame to sum up his complex body of work with only this one iconic image. No matter which corner of the globe he visited over the years, McCurry was always able to snap at least one emblematic photo of local life, capturing exotic and endangered cultures amid special - or sometimes quite ordinary - moments. A new exhibit of the photographer’s stunning lifework is now on display in a historic Budapest art-viewing hall.

In recent years, Budapest is hosting more and more expositions that attract not only local art lovers, but also visitors and media from a wide variety of foreign lands. Garnering lots of attention wherever they go, the pictures of American photographer Steve McCurry have had the same effect here in the Hungarian capital: even before the much-anticipated display was officially opened last week, people were already remarking on the advertisement on the façade of the Kunsthalle, wondering when the public would be allowed inside. Apart from being a locally significant event that could boost the popularity of art in Hungary, this display is also expected to strengthen the country’s position in the European art scene.

This is not McCurry’s first visit to Budapest: in the 1980s he spent several weeks here to document the everyday life of a local family, the Budais, and at the opening event of his current exhibition, he was finally reunited with his former hosts.

Steve McCurry wanted more than just to send his wonderful pictures for display in the Magyar metropolis, for the first time ever; he wanted to be here in person, not least to be able to meet the people he pretty much moved in with for several weeks about 30 years ago.

The landmark exhibit features about 60 spectacular oversized images from the various Asian trips of the artist, which, like most of McCurry’s photos, showcase some of the world’s most prominent conflict zones, as well as endangered cultures, ancient customs, and contemporary scenes.

The curators of the exhibition are András Bán and Zsuzsa Tulipán.
