The end of summer doesn’t have to mean the end of the fun. Budapest comes back to life in autumn, as cafés, restaurants and cultural venues fill up again and the city’s evening programmes return. If you’re still finding your way back into the Budapest rhythm after the holidays, here are places and activities to brighten up your weekdays and ease you back into city life.

Allee shopping center

Getting back into city life doesn't always have to mean rushing from one place to another. Sometimes, a quick break is exactly what you need to settle back into Budapest's rhythm. Váli Garden, next to Allee's main entrance on Váli Street, has been created with just that in mind. Once mainly a place people passed through, the area has been transformed into a greener, more welcoming community space, with plants, seating and shade. Stop by for a coffee, meet a friend or simply take a breather between plans around the city. The new space can also host smaller events, fashion shows and cultural programmes, adding another meeting point to the lively Bartók Quarter.

Budapest wine festival

There's more than the view to raise a glass to in Buda Castle this September. The Budapest Wine Festival returns for its 35th edition from 9-12 September, bringing more than a thousand wines and sparkling wines, renowned wineries and plenty of food to the Buda Castle Palace. Beyond tastings, visitors can meet winemakers at pop-up events, hear their stories during Kvaterka talks, or put their wine knowledge to the test with playful challenges at the VinAgora Wine Casino. Food options range from premium hams and fresh oysters to Lebanese, Italian and street food, while concerts and DJ sets keep things lively after dark. This year's new Explorer afternoon ticket is also a handy option for anyone looking to stop by for a glass or two after work.

Budapest park

If there's one place proving that summer in Budapest isn't quite over yet, it's Budapest Park. The open-air venue keeps the season going until 3 October, leaving plenty of time for a few more concerts and late-night parties. September's line-up includes Pogány Induló, Carson Coma, bongor, Bohemian Betyars x Parno Graszt, Analog Balaton and Fran Palermo, followed later by names such as Azahriah, Beton.Hofi, Parov Stelar, Sisi and Dzsúdló. This year, the Park is also celebrating the people behind the crowds with its Your Story Is Our Story campaign, sharing personal memories and connections formed at the venue over the years. So if you're not quite ready to say goodbye to festival season, there are still a few weeks to make another Budapest Park memory - and once the colder months arrive, KoriPark will be back with its ice rink.

Palace of wonders (Csodák Palotája)

Getting back into the school routine after the holidays isn't always easy, but the Palace of Wonders (Csopa) offers a fun way to ease into autumn. Here, learning feels more like discovery, with interactive games and experiments encouraging children to find answers for themselves. Four daily science shows in the Öveges Hall bring physics and natural sciences to life through spectacular experiments, while the Experience Lab lets visitors become scientists themselves. It's a great option for the back-to-school season - where kids can learn without it feeling much like learning at all.

Dunapark Café

In Újlipótváros, the familiar rhythm quickly returns once summer is over: breakfast on Pozsonyi Road, daytime meetings and business lunches, afternoon coffees and after-work catch-ups. New York Café

September in Budapest has its own rhythm: after the slower days of summer, the streets fill up again, calendars get busier and the city seems to pick up speed. At times like these, it's good to have a timeless spot where you can slow down, even if only for a coffee. Few places offer a more elegant setting for that than the New York Café. One of Budapest's most famous landmarks is still very much a working café, whether you're stopping by for a morning coffee, a business meeting, lunch or an afternoon cake. Its lavishly decorated interior, live music and classic coffee-house atmosphere make even an everyday visit feel a little special. And you don't necessarily need an occasion to come here - it works just as well for an important meeting as it does for a leisurely afternoon or a spontaneous stop while exploring the city.

Riso Ristorante & Terrace

If you want to make the most of Budapest's Indian summer and dine as though you were on a Mediterranean getaway, Riso Ristorante & Terrace, tucked away at the foot of Buda Castle, is a great place to do it. Located near Vienna Gate and surrounded by greenery, the restaurant has been welcoming guests since 2011, with its secluded terrace being one of its biggest draws. The 80-seat terrace can be enjoyed year-round - open-air in summer and covered during the colder months - while its lush greenery and different levels make it feel like a hidden oasis. The Italian-inspired menu fits the setting perfectly, with pizzas baked in a wood-fired oven using imported Italian flour and dough left to rise for at least 24 hours. Risottos are another speciality, including a long-time favourite with chilli, ginger and prawns, alongside wild mushroom and seafood versions, fresh pasta and other Mediterranean classics. Beyond relaxed dinners, Riso is also suited to family gatherings, business lunches and weddings - and the convenient parking is an added bonus in this part of Buda.
