Streams, springs, waterfalls, marshes, wetlands. Budapest and its surroundings boast special water habitats, perfect for cooling off on a hike. Explore this mysterious world via little bridges and boardwalks. We've picked 10 water hiking trails for you.

Szigetszentmiklós Floating Moors

Europe's second-largest floating moor features a short 700-metre nature trail. Extend your visit with a park, playground, and nearby cafe. This unique landscape of tussocks and reeds, connected by bridges, offers a wild escape just steps from the city.

Búbánatvölgy

For a venture slightly further from Budapest, try Búbánatvölgy near Esztergom. Despite its name (it literally translates to 'Sorrow Valley'), it's a cheerful area with stunning Danube Bend panoramas. Hike past fish ponds and fill your bottles from forest springs.

Fényes Nature Trail

Near Tata, the Fényes Nature Trail offers a unique experience for a small fee. Stroll kilometre-long boardwalks on stilts through an alder forest. Witness 20-22°C spring water bubbling up – a special habitat created after mining ceased. Explore Tata further, perhaps towards the Esterházy Champagne Factory or Szelim Cave.

Anna-völgyi Waterfall

During rainy periods, the Anna-völgyi Waterfall near Szentendre becomes a charming cascade. This popular hiking spot is best visited on weekdays. It offers everything a hiker desires: panoramas, a shelter, meadows, and springs.

Lower Jegenye Valley

Just outside Budapest, in suburban Solymár, discover the Lower Jegenye Valley waterfall. Explore a fairy-tale environment with a stream and small bridges. The hike features a 4-metre-high waterfall and Rózsika Spring, continuing to the 20th-century Solymár castle.

Szent Jakab Trail

Even those uninterested in saints will enjoy the Szent Jakab Trail near Dabas, part of the Hungarian Pilgrims' Route. This wild, medieval-feeling area lies where the Duna-Tisza Canal meets the Danube Valley Main Canal. A wooden path on stilts winds between tiny islands, with a lookout tower offering brilliant views.

Jági Nature Trail

The Jági Nature Trail is an easy, yet engaging, 4-kilometre hike. Expect beautiful panoramas, lakes, and wild forests, crossing a small wooden bridge over Aranyhegyi Stream (seasonal water). It's highly recommended for beginners, with clear, well-marked trails.

Turtle Nature Trail

In Dunakeszi, the short but pleasant Turtle Nature Trail reveals a hidden wetland world. Its 7 stations guide you through peaty, marshy countryside. While marsh turtles might be elusive, the vibrant butterflies, dragonflies, and wild surroundings provide ample charm.

Forest Etiquette: Whether you choose a closer or more distant hike from Budapest, always remember to follow forest etiquette!

Merzse Swamp

You don't need to leave Budapest to find an exciting water habitat. In District XVII, Merzse Swamp offers a glimpse into a rare wetland. Though drier in summer, its special microclimate and reeds hint at its true wetland character, more evident in spring and autumn.

Madárdal ('Bird Song') Trail

Lake Velence offers countless possibilities and incredible birdlife, especially along the Madárdal Trail at Dinnyési Marsh. As its name suggests, nightingales, reed warblers, cuckoos, and herons hide among the reeds. Be quiet, and you'll spot them! The 15-kilometre trail can be broken into three parts.
