October is when Budapest really settles into autumn. The trees are changing colour, café season is back in full force and the city calendar is filling up with markets, food festivals, cultural events and the first Halloween parties. With most of the month still ahead of us, we’ve picked some of the best things to do in Budapest this October, whether you’re in the mood for a cosy afternoon indoors, a long autumn walk or something a little livelier.

National Restaurant Week 2026

From 1 to 18 October,National Restaurant Week returns for its 30th edition, offering a chance to dine at some of Hungary's best restaurants. More than 150 restaurants are taking part this autumn, including plenty of newcomers, established favourites and restaurants recommended by the Michelin Guide or awarded a Bib Gourmand. Participating Budapest spots include 101Bistro, Baalbek, Marumba and Time Out Market Budapest, among many others.

L’Antidote at Müpa Budapest

L'Antidote take the stage at Müpa Budapest on 7 October. On their 2025 debut album, the trio blend elements of world music, jazz and experimental music to create an atmospheric sound. The group brings together Lebanese pianist and electronic musician Rami Khalifé, Albanian cellist Redi Hasa and Iranian-born Bijan Chemirani, who plays Persian percussion. Their music combines modern classical influences with Balkan and Middle Eastern traditions and plenty of improvisation.

Őszkert 2026 - Autumn Gardening Days at the Buda Arboretum 

From 9 to 11 October, the Autumn Gardening Days return to the Buda Arboretum. The programme includes an exhibition showcasing unusual houseplants, alongside daily gardening talks and guided walks around the arboretum. There will also be a gardening fair, where visitors can browse ornamental plants, herbs, flower bulbs, cacti and succulents, as well as gardening products and treats from local producers.

Coffee Day 2026 

On 10 October, Coffee Day returns for its 14th edition at Hall D of Millenáris, where visitors can spend the day sampling an unlimited selection of premium coffees that aren't available in regular retail shops. Well-known names from Hungary's coffee scene will be joined by newer roasters, while teas, chocolates, spirits and cocktails will also be available to try. The programme includes demonstrations, coffee tastings and professional workshops, with opportunities to learn more about everything from brewing better coffee at home to the world of fermentation.

Hello Piac

Hello Piac returns to Erzsébet tér on 10 October, bringing Hungarian designers and small businesses together in the heart of the city. You can browse bags, clothes, jewellery, home décor, natural cosmetics, handmade food products, children's accessories and sustainable alternatives, all directly from their makers. The fair also puts a focus on conscious shopping and products made by people with disabilities. Entry is free, and dogs are welcome too.

Have a creative autumn date

Not every October plan needs a packed programme. For something slower, book a creative workshop and spend a few hours making something with your hands. Nacre Creative has a full October programme covering everything from pottery and knitting to watercolour, sketching and bead embroidery. It works just as well for a date as it does for an afternoon with friends, especially once Budapest's colder, darker days start creeping in.

Vintage Mad Market at Mad Garden 

On 10 October, Vintage Mad Market returns to Mad Garden for its fourth edition, bringing together vintage and design pieces, quirky finds and retro treasures from around the world. There will also be a display of classic cars and motorbikes, a Playmobil exhibition and a charity auction by Padlás, where you can bid on special items. Food and drinks will be available throughout the day, along with a wide selection of Mad Scientist beers. Entry is free.

Budapest Marathon Festival 2026

The Budapest Marathon Festival, one of the city's biggest autumn running events, returns for its 41st edition on 10 and 11 October. Alongside the classic marathon, the weekend offers plenty of shorter distances, walks and urban hikes, with options for beginners, families and groups of friends. On Saturday, races range from 500 metres to 10 kilometres, while Sunday includes the 30-kilometre and full marathon distances, with the option to run individually, in pairs or as part of a relay team. The routes pass some of Budapest's UNESCO World Heritage sites and iconic city views, with live music and cheering crowds adding to the atmosphere along the way.

Family Sunday Funday at Time Out Market Budapest 

Sunday plans with kids don't have to mean choosing between entertaining them and actually enjoying lunch yourself. Family Sunday Funday takes place at Time Out Market Budapest every Sunday from 11:30am to 3:30pm, with crafts, games, music, dancing and activities for children. Once everyone has worked up an appetite, you can explore the market's food counters and see what's new on the seasonal menus.

Try HACHI’s new menu

Few things make the first genuinely chilly October days more appealing than a steaming bowl of ramen. HACHI Budapest is a good one to have on the autumn list, particularly if you haven't checked out its latest menu yet. The Japanese canteen-style spot in the city centre is known for ramen and comforting Japanese dishes, making it an easy choice for a casual lunch or dinner when the temperature drops.

From 15 to 18 October, the downtown Mexican favourite hosts its Grill & Tequila Festival, bringing together smoky grilled flavours and tequila for four days. Consider this your excuse for one more lively night out before Budapest fully moves into coat-and-hot-drink season.

Budapest cheese festival

Cheese Budapest makes its debut at Rákóczi Market Hall on 17 October, putting Hungarian artisan cheese and the people who make it in the spotlight. The evening programme includes cheese paired with craft beer, fermented drinks and wine, alongside raclette and a cheese market. Tastings require advance tickets, so this is one October plan worth booking ahead.

Take yourself on a cosy reading date

October is practically made for disappearing into a café or a park with a book for a couple of hours. Pick one you've been meaning to read, put your phone away and find yourself a cosy corner at places such as Aranypinty, Antigonèor City Park. Add coffee and something sweet, and suddenly spending an afternoon alone feels less like having no plans and more like having exactly the right ones.

Twilight the Vampire Party! Back to 2010s HALLOWEEN

On 22 October, Akvárium Klub is taking things back to peak vampire era with Twilight the Vampire Party! Back to 2010s Halloween. Expect hits from around 2008-2010, movie soundtracks, Halloween R&B and pop, themed visuals, vampire-inspired drinks and a dress code ranging from vampires and witches to simply black and red. Doors open at 11:30pm.

Spend Halloween night at Budapest Zoo

Budapest Zoo looks rather different after dark, especially this close to Halloween. On 30 October, the gates reopen at 6pm for a special Halloween Night, running until 11pm. The evening turns towards the darker side of the animal kingdom, with snakes and other creepy creatures joined by fire and LED performances, witches, games and plenty of Halloween atmosphere. It's spooky enough to feel seasonal while still being designed as a family-friendly night out.
