Sanyi bácsi büféje - Lupa Island
You can reach Sanyi bácsi büféje by taking the ferry to Lupa Island, which runs every hour. A return ticket costs HUF 1,800, and the friendly skipper is part of the charm. Tucked beneath towering plane trees, this family-run buffet has been a favourite meeting place for rowers and island residents for more than 30 years. Lunch is served until 3 pm, but afterwards you can still grab a sausage, a pogácsa or an ice-cold beer. Part of the appeal is how quickly you feel like one of the locals, sharing in the easy-going atmosphere of the Lupa community. On hot summer days, the shade of the giant trees and the constant breeze make it an especially pleasant place to linger. If you'd rather not cross to the island, Ebihal Büfé, right next to the ferry landing, offers a similarly relaxed waterside atmosphere.

Nomád Bár - Nagymaros
Nestled among the trees on the banks of the Danube between Kismaros and Nagymaros, Nomád Bár lives up to its name. Part free beach, part campsite, part canoe rental and part outdoor gathering spot, it's the kind of place where you can swim, paddle on the river or simply settle in for the day. As evening falls, music drifts across the riverside, making it all too easy to spend hours here with a spritzer in hand and nowhere else to be.

Kertünk Bár és Kilátó - Vác
Perched above Vác, Kertünk Bár is exactly what its name suggests: a little garden with one of the Danube Bend's finest views. Instead of tables, you can settle onto a picnic blanket or stretch out in a hammock, while the bar serves homemade lemonades and other refreshing drinks. Thanks to FERKO, there's also no shortage of burgers and grilled sausages. The programme occasionally includes concerts and workshops, but doing absolutely nothing is just as much a part of the experience. It's an ideal stop during a hike or bike ride - though don't be surprised if you end up staying until sunset.

Csillag Büfé - Római-part
The Római-part is one of Budapest's best places for a relaxed drink by the water, with each riverside spot offering its own distinct atmosphere. Our pick is Csillag Büfé, a long-standing favourite on the quieter stretch of the promenade. It preserves the nostalgic charm of the classic Római-part buffets while offering a menu that's a little more varied. The real attraction, though, is the setting itself: the Danube, the shade of the trees and the retro summer atmosphere that has been drawing generations of Budapest locals here for decades. Order something to eat or drink, find a seat by the river and simply watch the afternoon drift by.

Vasmacska Halsütöde - Népsziget
At the foot of the railway bridge leading to Népsziget, Vasmacska is one of Budapest's finest examples of a classic retro fish shack. You'll catch the smell of freshly fried fish before you even reach it, while the no-frills setting is exactly what you'd hope for from a traditional riverside snack bar. You don't come here for the interior design - you come for crispy fried fish, a cold drink and the nostalgic atmosphere that has long defined this corner of Népsziget.

Kacsakő Bisztró – Szentendre
Tucked away at the end of Szentendre's Danube Promenade, right beside the river and the free beach, Kacsakő is one of the town's most relaxed summer hangouts. The shady, bohemian spot serves food and drinks throughout the day, while its small outdoor stage occasionally hosts live concerts. The menu has expanded over the years, making it just as good a place for a meal as for a drink. On hot summer days, there's no better way to end your visit than by cooling your feet in the Danube.

The team behind Piknik Manufaktúra has lovingly restored Kósáék Portája, a traditional village house in Szokolya, creating Minifaktúra - a welcoming weekend spot serving homemade yet light, health-conscious breakfasts, cakes and a selection of simple dishes for locals and hikers alike. Getting there couldn't be easier, as the Királyrét Forest Railway passes right in front of the house. Although it's the newest and most developed place on our list, it never feels overdesigned. Instead, it has the comforting atmosphere of visiting your grandmother's peaceful countryside garden. Sip a spritzer at a table made from a vintage workbench, cool your feet in the little stream running along the edge of the property, and if you don't feel like leaving, you can even stay the night in one of the on-site accommodations.
