News of park redevelopment is always welcome, whatever the weather. Here we pick out five green retreats being revamped or recreated over the course of 2021.

Népliget
Ever more development is taking place in the vicinity of Népliget, the city’s lesser-known but largest park in south Pest, so it’s no surprise that public attention is now turned towards the park itself. Visible traces of long neglect abound: the clearings of this once beautiful English-style park have disappeared, while much of the valuable tree stock has rotted and is prone to invasive species and disease. News of Népliget’s renovation came into focus at the end of 2020, and since then, locals have been able to express their opinion on the park’s fate. The results will help develop a strategic renovation plan to be completed this year.

Pál-völgyi cave park
There are not one, but three neglected areas close to the largest and most popular cave in Budapest, Pál-völgyi, where a huge leisure park is planned. During the planning stage, the opinions and suggestions of the residents were also listened to, so that a much-needed park can be created, where children, dogs and the older generation will all feel comfortable. There will be a rock and plant showcase garden, a running track, a drinking fountain, an outdoor gym and a playground with a giant slide. In addition to maintaining and improving the quality of the green areas, they also plan to plant deciduous trees and shrubs in the area bordered by Csalit utca, Csatárka út and Szikla utca.

Tétény-réti családi park
A family-friendly park will be set up in the area around the Nagytétény Sváb Memorial, where there will be a themed playground, a slide park, a rain collector and even slopes for sledging. The playground will have two parts, with games installed for different age groups. The little ones will have a flower hut, a nest swing, a small tower and a sandpit, while the older kids will have a climbing wall and a trampoline. For those who want to play sports, there will also be a beach volleyball court and a grass football pitch in the vicinity.

Városháza park
In 2019, the mayor announced that the car park near City Hall facing the Kiskörút would be transformed into a public park, the cars to be replaced by trees, shrubs, flowers and grass. Unfortunately, Covid intervened, but development has been going on ever since, with the aim of creating more than 8,000 square metres of green space. Ideally all will be finished by the end of the pandemic.

Vizafogó park
Deciduous
trees, a lake full of water lilies, sun loungers and benches all feature in the
project envisioned by Archikon Architects for Vizafogó park. Here in Újlipótváros,
surrounded by communal residential blocks, an award-winning nursery has also long
been planned. A large artificial lake will be set up on a grassy space
currently used for parking. This will be developed as an eco park, with special
attention paid to natural surfaces, climate protection and sustainability.
Although the main activity will be relaxation, those who want to play sports will
also find suitable facilities.
