Several cafés around Budapest remained open for takeaway service during the quarantine, but coffee-shop culture is a sit-down experience – it’s just not the same from a paper cup. Now that curfew restrictions are lifting, cafés across the city have quickly begun reopening their terraces – and this is only the beginning!

1/12

Apricot

Tucked away near the National Museum on Bródy Sándor utca, Apricot offers world-class espressos, a tasty food menu and lots of talented latte art. The place is also kiddie-friendly, and has puzzle games to keep the little ones entertained.

Budapest Baristas

Budapest Baristas is not only a specialty coffee shop, but also a great place to get breakfast, American pancakes and salads. Near Múzeum körút and a prominent faculty of ELTE university, the view can be enjoyed from the outdoor eating area. Online reservations can be made via the Facebook page, which divides reservation times into 30-minute blocks.

3/12

Coyote Coffee & Deli

The oldest specialty coffee-shop in the Batthyány tér area, Coyote Coffee & Deli remained open during the quarantine, operating out of a small window on Iskola utca. Not only can you find great coffee here, but their food is great as well – especially the bagels! Dig in to cookies, vegan options and other snacks on the terrace.

4/12

Cube Coffee Bar

Its terrace overlooking lush, renovated Hunyadi tér, with its popular market opposite, the Cube serves light-roast, high-quality coffees, low-carb cakes, freshly baked pastries and a daily menu full of seasonal delights. Cool, welcoming, relaxed – and dog-friendly!

5/12

Espresso Embassy

Located within the elegant banking district, you'll love the Espresso Embassy, with its extra outdoor seating. Coffee and various snacks are available, and recently they added pasta from popular Italian eatery 2Spaghi to the menu.

6/12

fekete

In a hidden nook off Astoria, you find the interior courtyard of fekete, whose intimate ambiance gives you the feeling of being separate from the whole world. The surrounding architecture is elegant and refined.

7/12

Forest Cafe (Closed)

Their slogan might be 'naked in the woods', but you can keep your clothes on and still love the natural vibe of this downtown java hotspot. Along with coffee, enjoy home-baked goods and vegetarian lunch options.

8/12

Kaffeine Espresso Bar - Lövőház utca

One of our favourites in the pedestrianised zone of Lövőház utca is Kaffeine, which has several locations around the city, including Nagymező utca and Kálvin tér. Here, you can enjoy creamy, delicious coffees, mouth-watering cakes and even the refreshing lemonades which Budapest does so well.

9/12

Kelet

One of the oldest hang-out spots on busy Bartók Béla út, Kelet kept business going throughout the quarantine by offering online and in-person food and drink orders. Now, the terrace is also open! Enjoy teas, coffees, sodas and alcoholic beverages, as well as cakes, snacks, soups and main dishes which accommodate vegetarian needs.

10/12

Mantra Specialty Coffee Bar

At this 'meditation coffee sanctuary' in the heart of District V, you can sit back on the comfortable terrace overlooking cobbled downtown Veres Pálné utca. Even regulars continuously find new drink specialities here, such as the Matcha Libre, a combination of coconut water, ice, lime-mango syrup and matcha.

11/12

My Little Melbourne

Down Under is alive and well in Budapest at this new-age coffee-shop, which is characterised by funky art and lots of plants. Sip the café’s speciality drink, the Aussie Cappuccino, on its sunny outdoor terrace, located right on the edge of the Jewish District. On hot summer days, the affogato (espresso with ice cream), cannot be missed.

12/12

Waycup Coffee & Deli

A prime new-wave café in hip District XIII, Waycup is a popular spot among locals. A comfortable coffee aroma washes over you as you walk in, behind the counter a tasty line-up. A daily lunch menu is also available, and the coffee-shop sells its ground beans in Nespresso-compatible capsules, as well, so the coffee enthusiast can take a little bit of Waycup home with them.
