Silence

In Silence, two Portuguese priests – Adam Driver and Andrew Garfield – travel to 17th-century Japan, embarking on a mission to find their former mentor (Liam Neeson), a Jesuit priest who has vanished while spreading the gospel in Japan, where Christians were forced by torture and death to renounce their faith. However, when it proves that their mentor abandoned their God and now lives like a native, the young padres refuse to accept that Christianity cannot take root in Japan’s “mudswamp of moral apathy”. Oscar-winning director Martin Scorsese’s new film was inspired by the eponymous novel of 20th-century Japanese fiction writer Shusaku Endo, a story haunted by humane questions.
