In 1896, Hungary celebrated the thousandth year of its statehood with a public procession that was captured in the first Magyar-made motion picture. In the second half of the mini-movie, watchers can admire stunning scenes of Budapest’s spectacular Chain Bridge taken in the same year, complete with horse-drawn carriages and ladies in fancy dresses.
American director James Fitzpatrick recorded an eight-minute color film depicting the breathtaking beauty of Budapest just before World War II. The narration – which is reminiscent of old newsreels – talks about the country’s history, and introduces the Chain Bridge, the Parliament, , the , and even the wave pool at the .
There is no date provided for when this filmstrip was recorded – judging by the appearance of captured cars, it appears to be the early 1950s – but it is pretty certain that this narration-free musical movie was filmed by a true tram enthusiast, as the nine-minute video is filled with shots of Budapest’s public-transport vehicles, and of passengers getting on and off of them. As the music fades, we make our way out of to observe the trams and cars of the suburbs from up-close.
In this Hungarian-language video, Budapest in the ’50s is presented in 17 minutes. We can see scenes of the , do some window shopping in the old streets of the city, see children play at a playground in clothes of the era, and enjoy the buzz of old-time Budapest before we fly away from this fantastic city.
Norwegian television produced a half-hour short film about Budapest in the ’70s, titled “Stevnemøte i Budapest” (translating to “Rendezvous in Budapest”). In the film, one of the most famous Hungarian singers of the time, Kati Kovács, leads viewers through a day in Budapest’s past; the film crew enjoys a concert by Hungary’s Bergendy band in the former Youth Park (today’s ), before Kati leads us on a stroll, and then we join a jazz-ballet ball held on the top deck of a boat.
