This opera based on the play by American author David Belasco features an extraordinary Western romantic tale. The composer Puccini saw the play in New York in 1907 and then decided to tell the story in the language of music. First performed by the Met in 1910, the piece received significant attention right away. The plot is easy to follow and it takes the audience back to the age of the Gold Rush. The lead female, Minnie's character is a real Puccini heroine: fierce, fearless and ready to die for love. The Girl of the West will be directed by Vasily Barkhatov. Sung in Italian with English and Hungarian surtitles.
