First created in 2005, A Love Supreme is based on John Coltrane's legendary album from 1965. Coltrane’s music became famous because it was a mix of improvisation and strict structure; carefully shaped form and raw energy met within it. The production of Rosas translates this strange relationship into dance. De Keersmaeker and Sanchis connected composition and improvisation and lets them mingle.
De Keersmaeker notes: “In non-Western music, composition and improvisation are not mutually distinct concepts. Indeed, improvisation is composition in the immediacy of the moment.” Together with a new cast of young performers, De Keersmaeker and Sanchis rewrote A Love Supreme into a full evening program.
