After a long break caused by the pandemic, the Four Rooms Gallery is hosting its first fine arts event, a solo exhibition by Mátyás Boros. Horror vacui is an art-historical concept meaning a disgust or fear of space and emptiness, a visual compositional principle that leaves no free surface in the imagination. The concept of vacuum/emptiness used to have different meanings in different cultural-historical ages: it played different roles in ancient reliefs, icon painting, Byzantine mosaics, the depictions of the Far East, formal Baroque, and 20th-century and contemporary fine art, too. Besides the formal layer of its meaning, this concept also provides an opportunity for more complex discussions.
