Celebrating the ten-year anniversary of its foundation, the Fortepan photo archives has compiled a collection of photographs taken before 1990. The exhibition at the National Gallery, opening on 11 April, will present 500 photos from this material, all of which are closely connected to the 20th-century history of Hungary. These private photographs capture various events seen through the eyes of ordinary people, often spiced with humour. The thousands of images in the Fortepan archives, available online for anyone, make up a huge, collective family album of a shared past. As Hungarian poet Zsuzsa Rakovszky once wrote: “Every past is my past”.
