From October, a new chapter begins for the Hableány Paddle Steamer. Rather than operating alongside the Kisfaludy as before, the historic boat now follows its own independent schedule. It's a welcome change for those who prefer to explore the Danube aboard a smaller, more intimate boat. Hableány can accommodate up to 45 passengers from spring to autumn, with capacity limited to 25 during the autumn and winter months.
The smaller capacity creates a quieter, more personal atmosphere, with cruises starting from HUF 3,500 or €9. Colder weather isn't a problem either: Hableány has a heated cabin for the winter months, complete with a cosy fireplace that makes the journey even more inviting.
Hableány is more than an atmospheric riverboat - it also carries on a remarkable piece of Hungarian maritime history. The original vessel, led by Ödön Széchenyi, became the first to travel by water from Budapest to Paris in 1867. The journey caused a stir at the Paris World's Fair, and even Napoleon III stepped aboard. The voyage also left its mark on literature: the world of Danube adventures later provided inspiration for Jules Verne's novel The Danube Pilot. Stepping aboard today's Hableány therefore offers more than an autumn cruise - it's also a glimpse into a fascinating chapter of the river's history.
It's worth noting that the Duna Cruises Hableány Paddle Steamer is not the same vessel as the sightseeing boat that tragically sank in Budapest in 2019. The two boats share only the same name; the Duna Cruises vessel carries the Hableány name as part of its historical heritage.
Citadella - where elegance meets panoramic views
For those looking to combine comfort with impressive views, Citadella is a great choice for an autumn cruise through Budapest. Its climate-controlled cabin, comfortable seating and large windows make sightseeing pleasant even on cooler days, while the panoramic deck , open all year round, offers 360-degree views of the city .
The views aren't the only attraction on board Citadella. A welcome drink is included to start the journey, while an unlimited drinks package is available for those who want to enjoy a few more along the way. Kisfaludy - a journey back in time on the Danube
Aboard Kisfaludy, the history of river travel comes to life. The vessel is a faithful replica of the first steamship to sail on Lake Balaton, complete with a working paddle wheel that gives it its distinctive character. Its spacious deck combines a sense of history with panoramic views of the Danube, making the journey itself part of the experience.
Cruises aboard Kisfaludy are available with a welcome drink or an unlimited drinks package , and from October there's a little more flexibility too. Passengers who prefer to skip the welcome drink receive a one-time €2 voucher when boarding, which can be used towards any drink from the onboard bar.
Autumn flavours at the onboard bar - from hot drinks to signature cocktails
Autumn cruises with Duna Cruises come with plenty to choose from at the bar, with the same drinks menu available across all three boats. Alongside refreshing lemonades and cocktails, there are also options better suited to cooler days. The homemade lemonades, prepared with fresh ingredients, are a good match for sunnier autumn afternoons. For something a little different, try one of the signature cocktails, such as the Duna Tonic, Duna Breeze or Dock 10 Tea, each made to its own recipe.
Once the temperature drops, the hot drinks take over, with hot chocolate, spiced apple juice and mulled wine all on the seasonal menu. Alongside the classic Winter Classic Hot Chocolate, there are two white chocolate versions: the alcohol-free Princess Sissy and its alcoholic counterpart, Queen Sissy. For something a little different, there's also the coconut-flavoured Bounty Hot Choco and sweet-and-salty Salty Caramoon Hot Choco. Other cold-weather options include a cinnamon and cherry Mojito, Irish coffee and hot spiced apple juice, with the latter also available with pálinka. And, of course, there's mulled wine, prepared according to Duna Cruises' own recipe.
Unlimited drinks aboard Citadella and Kisfaludy
An unlimited drinks package is also available aboard Citadella and Kisfaludy. Priced at €12, it covers the entire cruise and includes unlimited prosecco, white wine, rosé, beer, mulled wine and hot tea. The package can be added when booking tickets online or purchased at the port, when boarding or directly from the onboard bar.
The intimate, historic atmosphere of Hableány, the panoramic views from Citadella and the journey back in time aboard Kisfaludy offer three different ways to experience Budapest from the Danube. Choose a sunny daytime cruise, set off around sunset as the city begins to light up, or opt for a later departure and enjoy Budapest after dark with a hot drink in hand.
