At the gateway to the Danube Bend, in the historic heart of Esztergom, you’ll find the renewed Portobello Wellness Hotel, welcoming guests for spring 2026 with fully refurbished rooms and a wide range of services designed for every generation. Clean, modern interiors, family-friendly solutions, generous gastronomic offerings, and unlimited wellness experiences ensure a truly relaxing and memorable stay. In this article, we also highlight some of the most exciting sights in the area, the most beautiful viewpoints, and a few of the best places to eat around town.

The Portobello Wellness Hotel Esztergom is one of the area's most popular wellness and family-friendly hotels, offering an ideal base whether you're exploring the city or the wider Danube Bend. Located along the Kis-Duna promenade, the hotel combines peaceful, homely relaxation with the lively atmosphere of the historic town.

Cosy comfort and experiences for every generation

By March 2026, the hotel's rooms will be fully renovated, and guests can now book only the newly refurbished ones. The interiors are modern and clean yet warm and welcoming, offering a comfortable space that suits a variety of needs. Whether you're visiting as a couple or with children, you'll easily find the right option: most double rooms can be connected, while family rooms with sofa beds or bunk beds are also available, along with both shower and bathtub options. Some rooms look out towards the Esztergom Basilica or Tamás Hill, while the opposite-facing rooms also offer beautiful views.

The pleasant yet elegant colour palette and the Danube-inspired artwork above the beds fit perfectly with the hotel's concept and its surroundings. The rooms are equipped with a capsule coffee machine, minibar, and safe, and as you'd expect from a wellness hotel, bathrobes are also prepared in the wardrobe for guests.

One of our favourite spots was the bright lobby, furnished with soft sofas and armchairs that make it a lovely place to linger. Warm colours and natural textures create a welcoming atmosphere, while the beautifully designed reception desk adds a refined touch. The space is easy to navigate, and the lobby flows seamlessly into the neighbouring bar, where guests can enjoy cocktails, wines, draft beer, syrups, and excellent coffee.

A dedicated children's corner has also been created, complete with a drawing table that remains visible from almost every part of the lobby and bar, allowing parents to relax while keeping an eye on their little ones. Older kids - and adults too - can enjoy touchscreen board games, which have proven to be a big hit across generations.

Excellent services from rich buffets to unlimited wellness

The Kis-Duna Restaurant, located within the hotel, is separated from the lobby and bar only by a glass wall. A generous buffet-style breakfast and dinner are included in the stay, served over extended hours to suit both early risers and those who prefer a later meal. The selection is varied and seasonal, offering a wide range of both hot and cold dishes.

At breakfast, guests can choose from a variety of egg dishes alongside a rich selection of cold cuts, cheeses, and pastries. There are also yoghurts, muesli, porridge, and semolina pudding on offer, ensuring that every generation can find something they enjoy. We would especially highlight the generous selection of fresh fruits and vegetables.

At dinner, guests can choose from a variety of meat or vegetarian soups and main courses, while the dessert selection ranges from classic zserbó to creamy cottage cheese desserts. The generous offering of fresh salads, roasted vegetables, and fruit salads is also a highlight. Meat dishes cover a wide spectrum, from chicken and salmon to pork stew, while favourites like schnitzel, fish, or fried camembert are also available. At lunchtime, guests can choose from the à la carte menu, featuring seasonal dishes and a mix of Hungarian and international favourites.

From the first floor of the Portobello, guests have direct access to the Aquasziget Experience Spa, where indoor and outdoor thermal and adventure pools, several types of saunas, and water slides await. Entry to the spa is included in the room price, so guests can enjoy the wellness facilities without any additional cost.

The wellness area is also fully child-friendly, just like the hotel itself, where special attention is given to the comfort of families travelling with children. Baby cots, bathtubs, and high chairs are available, and a dedicated children's menu is also offered. Both breakfast and dinner feature a selection that even picky eaters can enjoy. On the first floor, a playroom awaits younger guests, while during peak seasons and special periods, animators organise activities for children.

In addition to Wi-Fi, a 24-hour reception, and welcoming communal spaces, guests can also enjoy free outdoor and underground parking. Thanks to the hotel's central location, most of Esztergom's main sights are within walking distance, and electric scooters can also be rented directly at the hotel for getting around the city.

Esztergom and its surroundings offer plenty to explore

Right next to the hotel runs the Kis-Duna promenade, lined on one side with a beautiful row of old plane trees and on the other with chestnut trees, making it a lovely walk in every season. The Mediterranean-style Széchenyi Square is just a five-minute stroll away, where you'll find several cafés, restaurants, and historic buildings.

A must-see sight in Esztergom is the Esztergom Basilica, the largest church of the Hungarian Roman Catholic Church. Its impressive dome can be reached by climbing 413 steps, while the renovated Panorama Hall is accessible by lift and houses a café and an exhibition presenting the recent restoration works of the building. From the dome's lookout terrace, visitors are rewarded with breathtaking views over the Castle District, Párkány (Štúrovo), and the Danube Bend. It's also worth visiting the treasury on the first floor, and for families, the Portobello Hotel reception offers a playful guidebook that helps children explore the basilica in an interactive way.

The Esztergom Castle Museum, expected to reopen in spring, also promises exciting discoveries, while the city is home to several other museums as well. Among them are the Duna Museum and Geoda, both particularly engaging for children, as well as the Balassa Bálint Museum and the Babits House, which is open from spring to autumn.

It's also worth walking up St. Thomas Hill to admire the city from above, wandering through the cobbled streets of the Castle District, and stopping by the area's cosy cafés and restaurants along the way.

Esztergom and Párkány (Štúrovo) are connected by the Mária Valéria Bridge, which can be crossed both on foot and by car, and the promenade on the opposite bank also offers beautiful views of the city.

From Esztergom, it's easy to reach the charming holiday area of Búbánat-völgy, as well as the Kis-Strázsa Hill nature trail, which rewards visitors with wonderful panoramic views and, in spring, colourful wildflowers and butterflies along the way. Komárom and Visegrád are also within easy reach, both offering plenty of sights to explore, from historic fortresses to hilltop citadels.

Food tips and active programmes

Esztergom boasts several excellent restaurants and cosy cafés, perfect for starting or ending the day on a high note. Whether you're craving Hungarian classics or international flavours, looking for a specialty coffee, or simply in the mood for a delicious pastry, you'll find plenty of great options. Highlights include the impressive Prímás Pince and its freely visitable wine cellar tunnel, as well as the Michelin-starred 42 Restaurant, where chef Levente Koppány and owner Sándor Varga draw inspiration from their travels to create a refined fine dining experience.

If you're in the mood for a great coffee alongside a perfect breakfast or pastry, we recommend the nearby ISLER breakfast spot and café, or Pacificaffe Beans & More, where the selection of specialty coffees is particularly impressive - and you can even take your favourites home. It's also worth soaking up the unique atmosphere of the Esztergom Market, where, in addition to local delicacies, visitors can often find programmes and themed weekends.

For those who enjoy active relaxation, a cycling path runs right next to the hotel, making it easy to head towards Lake Palatinus or even Visegrád on two wheels. The Aquasziget Experience Spa also features a fitness room, and the nearby New Pilates by AD studio, located just a few minutes from the Portobello Hotel, is another great option for staying active.

Whether you're planning a romantic getaway or travelling with children, prefer historic sights or culinary experiences, or are looking for active adventures or relaxed downtime, the Portobello Wellness Hotel is an ideal starting point for a short escape or a longer stay in Esztergom.
