Even if fireworks aren’t your thing, the city’s parks and panoramic spots promise a spectacular view.

On 20 August, Budapest once again offers a wide range of St Stephen’s Day programmes, with the most spectacular being the evening fireworks and drone display – the Play of Fire and Lights . Starting at 9 pm, the show will light up a 5-kilometre stretch of the Danube embankment, from Margaret Island to Petőfi Bridge. This year also sees the return of The Old Shepherd’s Tale , first introduced last year, now enhanced with light projections and a dazzling drone performance to create an unforgettable 30-minute spectacle.

You can find details of the other St Stephen’s Day events on the official website and mobile app, while information on road closures related to the celebrations is available here. And now – here are our top tips for watching the fireworks!

You can enjoy the view from the Petőfi Bridge, or head to the atmospheric Gül Baba Tomb and the nearby Mansfeld Péter Park, both easy to reach. Gellért Hill – including the popular Philosopher’s Garden – is always a favourite, and the stretch above Gellért Square also offers fantastic panoramas. Around Buda Castle, the Fisherman’s Bastion, the entire side facing Pest, and the Várkert Bazár area are top spots. On the Pest side, we once again recommend Nehru Part and the surrounding embankments for a front-row seat to the show.

If you’d prefer to enjoy the spectacle in a quieter setting, head to one of the lookout points around the city – the Erzsébet Lookout and the Guckler Károly Lookout onHármashatár Hill are both great options. Normafa is an obvious choice, while Nagy-Kevély offers distance from the crowds but still a beautiful view of the lights. The Children’s Railway will even run special services for the occasion. And if you’d like to celebrate in truly elegant style, check out our article recommending sky bars and boat cruises for the event.
