In recent years, Budapest has welcomed more and more ceramics workshops, which we're absolutely chuffed about. It means there are increasingly more places where we can discover the craft's secrets, have a go at working with clay, and create something tangible after a day of mental work.
Eszter Tábi and Andrea Szuromihave known each other for ages, even working together before. But they always dreamt of creating a place where they could build a community and support other ceramicists.
Their vision was a space to share equipment – like the kiln – and their knowledge, helping to keep the craft thriving. Ultimately, this dream became AMMA: a comprehensive ceramics workshop. Here, you'll find courses and classes, rental opportunities, and even a handy little shop section.
What makes AMMA stand out?
So, what makes AMMA different from other places? While other spots might offer table rental, the real novelty here is that you can use the space anytime, not just during set studio or shop hours. Essentially, every ceramicist can move freely and create whenever suits them best. Of course, time slots and various options like passes and memberships are also available.
The space is designed to comfortably accommodate 10-14 people simultaneously, so everyone has plenty of room to knead, shape, and craft their pieces. And they genuinely mean it – there's ample space for everyone.
On the ground floor, you'll find the shop, selling pieces made by the artists. This is also where they run courses in wheel throwing, clay recycling, and glazing. It's home to their 55-gallon electric kiln, which only fires at high temperature (2,264°F). Up on the gallery level are the rented table spaces, and notably, AMMA also offers use of a plaster lathe.
Beginners are welcome!
Surprisingly, Eszter and Andrea see far more visitors who aren't qualified ceramicists but have some prior experience. For these individuals, the classes offer a chance to really delve into their passion, providing a welcome escape from daily life. It's important to note that these aren't traditional teaching workshops; instead, they're practice sessions mentored by Eszter and Andrea.
For complete novices, they suggest the intensive foundation course. After completing this, you can join the regular practice sessions anytime to hone your skills. Currently, only this monthly foundation course is running – it's so popular it usually fills up in a day – but they plan to offer technique-specific sessions in the future.
The studio's name came about quite by chance, or perhaps, by fate. Eszter explained they spent ages trying to find a name that truly captured their ethos. Then, her eye landed on a book from a book rescue – László Dobossy's Mitológiai ábécé (Mythological Alphabet). Inside, she found this sentence:
The eternal sky god, the one and almighty Amma once created the world from a single handful of clay.
And so, AMMA was born.
The workshop draws many hobbyists seeking relaxation, but also supports recent ceramics graduates by offering rental space and equipment. Besides fostering community, the girls' main aim is to
PROVIDE SPACE AND EQUIPMENT FOR THOSE WHO'VE COMPLETED CERAMICS DIPLOMAS OR COURSES.
Additionally, the shop window will feature a rotating monthly piece to highlight new talent. They also back recently qualified ceramicists with a dedicated section in the AMMA shop to sell their work.
