Autumn is the perfect time to visit Budapest, and if you're looking for tips on what to do as the leaves turn golden, we've got you covered with the ultimate day itinerary. From pumpkin spice lattes to scenic nature walks and lively Latin fiestas, here's how to experience Budapest in the fall.
Breakfast bite and pumpkin spice latte
First things first, let’s get your caffeine fix, autumn style: head to Orient Café near Keleti Railway Station for a pumpkin spice latte. It’s the perfect way to warm up on a chilly morning. And hey, why not stock up on some banana bread while you're at it? Once you’re fueled up, take a stroll towards City Park, passing through the hidden gems of Budapest's 7th district. Known as the 'Hungarian Chicago,' this neighbourhood is a treasure trove of early 20th-century architecture.
Take a stroll in nature
City Park, a favourite of locals, is a real treat all year round. But once leaves turn brown, it gets all the more pretty. Whether you’re strolling along the promenades or taking a more off-the-beaten-path route, you’ll be surrounded by nature, alongside playful dogs, families, and locals. Chill on the picturesque lakeside, wander through the enchanting Vajdahunyad Castle, try chimney cake at Édes Mackó, or check out the permanent exhibition of the House of Music Hungary. Don’t miss the striking architecture of the Museum of Ethnography, either. If you’ve got more time, take a balloon ride for a bird’s-eye view of the city, meet the adorable residents of the Zoo, or unwind at the iconic Széchenyi Baths.
Lunch at Gundel Restaurant
It's time to dive into some classic Hungarian dishes, and you don't have to go far from the City Park to find one of the most iconic spots. The elegant Gundel Restaurant has been treating guests to delicious goose liver paté, goulash soup, paprika chicken, Wiener schnitzel, and stuffed peppers since 1894. Don't skip the world-famous Gundel pancake for dessert (crêpe filled with walnuts, orange peel and rum, topped with chocolate sauce). Once you're happily stuffed, make your way to Heroes' Square and hop on the Millennium Underground toward the city centre.
Walk in the city
If you're in the mood to explore the city's famous shopping street, Váci utca, get off the Millennium Underground at Vörösmarty tér. Otherwise, Deák Ferenc tér will be your stop. Either way, you'll soon find yourself on the Small Boulevard, where you can soak in the downtown buzz and enjoy a scenic walk toward Kálvin tér, passing some of the city's major landmarks. One of the highlights is the Great Synagogue—take a moment to admire its stunning exterior before heading inside for a guided tour. Afterwards, pop by the brilliant Rododendron design shop to pick up some truly unique souvenirs.
See gorgeous jewellery at the Hungarian National Museum
Another must-see is the Hungarian National Museum, nestled between Astoria and Kálvin tér. Start your visit with a stroll through its charming garden and treat yourself to a slice of cake from the on-site confectionery. But don't stop there; the museum itself is an absolute gem, inside and out. In addition to its impressive permanent collection, there's always something exciting to see. From October 19th, you can marvel at a stunning array of jewellery, spanning from ancient times to the present day, at the brand new 'Shine! – Time for Jewellery' exhibition. Not only can you admire pieces, but you'll also learn their fascinating stories, and uncover deeper meanings beyond their beauty. You might easily find yourself spending hours there, come rain or shine. (x)

Crossing the bridge
The sun may be setting quickly, but lucky for you, Budapest is breathtaking in the evening too. The best place to soak up the views of the illuminated city is from Gellért Hill, just a short walk from the National Museum. Simply cross Liberty Bridge, and there you are. Whether you hike up to the cross or venture even higher (keep in mind the Citadel is currently under construction), you'll be rewarded with panoramic views.
Dinner in one of the coolest neighbourhoods
After descending the hill, turn right and explore Bartók Béla út. This neighbourhood was once named one of the coolest in the world, and we couldn't agree more. It's vibrant, artsy, and tidy, with a strong sense of community. The streets are lined with art galleries, coffee shops, and restaurants, so finding a great spot for dinner won't be a problem at all. Craving some heat? Try the spicy Latin-American flavours at Nicaragua. For a mix of international dishes and delicious hot cocktails, Mitzi's got you covered. If it's a freshly baked Neapolitan pizza you're after, head straight to Moto. And for a lighter bite, Kelet offers a cosy spot where you can pair your meal with a good book.
End the day with a fiesta!
If you feel like dancing, hop on tram 47/49 and make your way back to the party district! Gozsdu Courtyard's stylish tapas bar Vicky Barcelona, is ready to spice up your night with Latin parties and hot beats from Thursday to Saturday. Thursdays bring mainstream hits, Fridays are all about perreo, and Saturdays turn up the heat with Gozadera nights – perfect to wrap up an autumn day on a high note.
