MOME graduate Zsolt Vidák has shown many sides of Budapest, its buildings and its daily life in minute detail, always with a few touches of humour that you have to look out for.
The Széchenyi Baths, the Anker Palace by Deák tér and prominent streets have all been given the Vidák treatment, some displayed in exhibitions around the world, others in collaboration with magazines.
Recently, Vidák has spent months on a particular illustration of another revered city landmark:
“I depicted Keleti station, usually packed with small details and humour,” says Vidák. “I made the picture on behalf of Alex Buono, executive producer of the new season of the Netflix series Russian Doll. A significant part of the series was filmed in Budapest, and Alex gave the actors the picture as a memory of this event. The image was created using digital technology, eventually in the form of a limited-edition, numbered giclée print”.
In the picture, a MÁV locomotive 424 is given prominence, referring to the train used in the filming. The picture also shows the seven characters and Alex with a loudspeaker in his hand.
As in Zsolt’s other graphics, there are plenty of amusing asides. A man carrying a corpse wrapped in a carpet is about to board the train, while a little boy in the foreground is trying to close his suitcase with a hand sticking out of it, and a figure attempts to climb through a compartment window. See if you can spot them!
